There are significant repairs made at different times. The painting depicts an outing of gentlemen and ladies to a large cave in the forest. The natural environment is very realistic, with the greatest attention given to the highly detailed trees. The leaves are exquisitely rendered. The human figures are quite small and appear to be awed by the beauty of their natural surroundings. The weather is placid and the forest around them, though dark, is not menacing. The valley in the distance is filtered through a bluish mist, which also suggests a Flemish origin. The much–repaired gilt frame, which appears to be original, bears a plaque “Gift of Adele Sarry”.
