A Low Kang Chinese Chest

This low Chinese chest from Shanxi is crafted from solid elmwood and retains a rich, dark finish with a handsome patina. The compact form features two drawers above a larger central compartment, decorative carved side brackets, and a shaped lower apron. Raised ends frame the top. Low chests of this type were designed for use alongside the traditional Chinese kang, a raised heated platform that served as a place for sleeping, sitting, and gathering, particularly in northern China.
