A Large Carved and Gilt Architectural Carving, C. 1780
$5,900
This large decoration was once part of an altarpiece in an Italian church. It was hand-carved from oak wood in an acanthus leaf pattern, painted and partially gilt. As ecclesiastical buildings are restored and modernized, the most exquisite parts are salvaged and sold. This piece could be used as a decoration in a hallway, great room or even over a bed. The wood is in good condition and the painted surfaces are handsomely cracked and aged. The baroque fascination with movement and joyous curves is evident -could it be actually baroque period? Yes.
