A MaJiayao Neolithic Vessel

Majiayao Culture, China, c. 3300–2000 BCE Painted terracotta jar and cover reflecting the refined ceramic traditions of Neolithic northwestern China. The vessel features a rounded body with a tall neck and fitted lid decorated with hand-painted geometric bands and abstract motifs in dark mineral pigments over a buff earthen surface. The removable cover is surmounted by a sculpted dog-form finial serving as a handle, adding both functional and symbolic character to the piece.
