A Painted Neolithic Pottery Jar

Yangshao Culture, China, c. 5000–3000 BCELarge painted terracotta jar associated with the sophisticated ceramic traditions of Neolithic China. The vessel is decorated with finely painted abstract motifs, including rhythmic linear and circular patterns rendered in mineral pigments over a warm earthen surface. Low-fired pottery of this type served both practical and ceremonial purposes and was commonly used for storage and funerary activities within early agrarian communities. The flared mouth was both for pouring and drinking. Scholars believe the swirling patterns found on so many Yangshuo pieces represent natural forces, the cosmos, more broadly, and the turbulent Yellow River.
