A Han Dynasty Cocoon Jar

Western Han Dynasty, 206 BCE–8 CE A painted red and black pottery jar known as a “Cocoon Jar,” one of the most distinctive ceramic forms of the Han Dynasty. Characterized by its rounded body and swirling painted decoration, vessels of this type were commonly placed within tombs as storage containers intended for use in the afterlife. They may have also symbolized rebirth as eggs and cocoons appear inert but harbor life. The elegant silhouette derives from earlier Warring States prototypes and reflects the refined ceramic traditions of early imperial China. Its polished surface and balanced proportions emphasize the restrained sophistication characteristic of Han Dynasty funerary pottery. Also known as a "duck egg" jar.
