A Scholar’s Rock (Gongshi)

Zhaoqing, China, Middle Qing Dynasty, C. 1800Naturally formed scholar’s rock, or gongshi, valued for its organic silhouette, textured surface, and contemplative presence. Traditionally appreciated by scholars and collectors, stones of this type were displayed in studios and gardens as objects of meditation and aesthetic inspiration within Chinese literati culture. The eroded stone was seen as the embodiment of yin and yang forces, the male being the stone and the female being the cavities and absences in the stone. The rocks physically illustrated Taoist philosophy, in which unseen forces act on and manifest themselves in the seen world. Their weathered surfaces, dramatic contours, and naturally eroded openings symbolized harmony and balance in nature.
