A Han Terracotta Duck Figure

Eastern Han Dynasty, Sichuan Province, China, 25–220 CEA Rare terracotta duck figure created as a mingqi funerary object during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Animal sculptures of this type symbolized abundance, domestic prosperity, and the continuation of earthly comforts in the afterlife. Rendered in simplified yet expressive forms, the figures reflect the Han Dynasty’s growing interest in naturalistic observation and rural life. Much tomb earth and mineral accretions cover the original surface, which is grey terra cotta. Pottery waterfowl were commonly placed within tombs alongside architectural and agricultural models as symbols of harmony, nourishment, and spiritual continuity beyond death. This one is balanced enough to stand on two legs.
