A Pottery Tripod Ding Vessel

Han Dynasty, China, 206 BCE–220 CETerracotta tripod ding vessel modeled after ancient Chinese ritual bronze forms. Raised on three sturdy legs and fitted with loop handles and a domed cover, the vessel reflects ceremonial food containers used in early Chinese ritual culture. Ding vessels symbolized status, authority, and ancestral reverence, while pottery examples of this type were commonly produced as mingqi funerary objects for tomb burial. The sculptural form preserves the enduring influence of archaic bronze ritual traditions within Han Dynasty ceramic art and funerary practice. This particular ding has an interesting, even patina from mineral accretions, not a white slip.
