A Han Dynasty Cocoon Jar

Western Han Dynasty, China, 206 BCE–8 CEBurnished black pottery jar known as a “Cocoon Jar,” representing one of the most distinctive ceramic forms of the Han Dynasty. Characterized by its rounded body and incised vertical lines, vessels of this type were commonly placed within tombs as storage containers intended for use in the afterlife. They may have also symbolized rebirth, as eggs and cocoons appear inert but harbor life. The elegant silhouette derives from earlier Warring States prototypes and reflects the refined ceramic traditions of early imperial China.
