A "Moon Flask" Bianhu Vessel

Han Dynasty, China, 206 BCE–220 CE An archaistic "moon flask" bianhu vessel characterized by a flattened body, short cylindrical neck, and paired ring handles at the shoulder. The piece is molded from black terra cotta and retains much red pigment as well as mineral accretions. Inspired by earlier archaic bronze prototypes, vessels of this type were associated with the storage and presentation of wine in ritual contexts. During the Han Dynasty, pottery bianhu examples were commonly produced as mingqi funerary objects intended to accompany the deceased into the afterlife as symbols of refinement and status. The sculptural silhouette reflects the enduring influence of ancient bronze ritual forms within early Chinese ceramic traditions.
