A Bronze Figure of a Crouching Dragon

A cast bronze crouching dragon sculpture from Northern China, dating to the Jin Dynasty, 1115–1234 CE. Rendered with a sinuous body, scaled surface, and sharply defined horns, the figure reflects the dragon’s enduring role as a symbol of imperial authority, protection, and cosmic power within Chinese visual culture. Sculptures of this type were often incorporated into palatial or ceremonial architecture as auspicious guardians intended to ward off misfortune. The bronze surface preserves substantial natural oxidation and mineral patina, enhancing the sculpture’s archaeological character. Like all large bronze figures, it is made of hollow sections. Some losses to the right front claw foot.
