A Western Zhou Bronze Ritual Bell

Western Zhou Dynasty, China, c. 1046–256 BCEHeavily cast bronze ritual bell of Yong Zhong form, distinguished by its lenticular body and powerful archaic silhouette. The surface is divided into symmetrical sections decorated with cylindrical bosses and stylized C-scroll motifs framed by geometric borders. The cylindrical suspension handle features a raised studded band and twisted loop attachment. Rich malachite and russet encrustations formed through centuries of oxidation enhance the sculpture’s archaeological character. Bells of this type were central to Zhou ceremonial and court music traditions, symbolizing authority, ritual order, and showing the sophistication of early Chinese bronze casting.
