A Terracotta Model of a Farm Courtyard
$4,200
Han Dynasty, China, 206 BCE–220 CERare terracotta model of a farm courtyard created as mingqi for placement within elite tombs during the Han Dynasty. The composition features an enclosed structure populated with miniature poultry and domestic animals, reflecting the agricultural foundations of early imperial Chinese society. The tiled roof, walls, and stairs are rendered with realism and detail. The same is true of the animals, most notably a sow in the courtyard, suckling her piglets. A seated human figire and several birds were placed along the perimeter, though it is hard to determine if they were originally part of the diorama or not. Models of this type symbolized prosperity, stability, and the continuation of daily life in the afterlife.
