A Pair of Court Official Figures

A pair of pottery court figures from China’s Northern Wei period, retaining traces of their original painted patina. Their stylized forms reflect the artistic exchange between early medieval Chinese and Central Asian traditions. Created as mingqi, or burial attendants, they were intended to accompany and serve the deceased in the afterlife. Their beards make them unusual and allow for several interpretations. Most likely, they represent Northern Wei aristocrats or attendants of mixed Chinese and Central Asian heritage, reflecting the dynasty’s culturally complex, non-Han origins. Alternatively, the beards may emphasize their foreign identity, suggesting traders, attendants, or musicians in luxurious dress. Whatever their identity, the figures are finely molded, richly detailed, and well preserved.
