A Glazed Pottery Tower Model

Eastern Han Dynasty, China, 25–220 CE Impressive green and amber glazed pottery model of a multi-storey tower reflecting the funerary traditions of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The tower is set inside a low circular basin, which symbolically acts as a moat. Finely modeled with tiered roofs, balconies, and latticework details, the structure is accompanied by miniature animal figures gathered around the basin, symbolizing harmony, prosperity, and estate life. Architectural mingqi of this type were created for elite burials as symbolic residences for the deceased in the afterlife. The surviving green and amber lead glazes exemplify the ceramic innovation and imaginative funerary art characteristic of Han Dynasty China. Green glazes are made from lead and copper and turn iridescent upon long exposure to water. The lack of iridescence indicates a dry tomb.
