26n01073___painted_equestrian_figure
A Pair of Painted Equestrian Figures

Tang Dynasty, China, 618–907 CE
A pair of painted terracotta equestrian figures depicting musicians mounted on large Central Asian horses. The horses are beautifully formed, with elegant turned heads, knotted tails and traces of original polychrome decoration remaining across the saddle, garments, and harness. The riders are equally fine, with elegant hands, full faces, and flowing robes. It seems possible that they were not entertainers but actual aristocrats, playing for pleasure alone. The grey terracotta was covered in a white slip, which mostly survives. The modeling is quite fine and slender. Created as mingqi funerary objects, sculptures of this type were placed within tombs to accompany and serve the deceased in the afterlife. The horse reflects the Tang court’s admiration for powerful steeds from the Western Regions, celebrated for their role in military strength, diplomacy, and imperial prestige. The expressive modeling and colorful decoration display the artistic refinement and cosmopolitan character seen in Tang Dynasty funerary art.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0564/5346/4220/files/26N01073___Painted_Equestrian_Figure_01.jpg?v=1779372821
