A Group of "Stickmen" Soldier Figures

Han Dynasty, China, 206 BCE–220 CE This remarkable group of Han Dynasty terracotta soldier figures was created as mingqi, or spirit objects, placed within elite tombs to accompany and serve the deceased in the afterlife. The collection includes both male and female attendants, represented in grey and the rarer black terracotta. Characterized by elongated proportions, serene expressions, and individually modeled faces, each figure possesses a distinct personality despite the standardized production methods of the period. Originally fitted with articulated wooden arms and dressed in textile garments that have not survived, the figures retain traces of pigment and exhibit the restrained yet expressive aesthetic of Han funerary art. Together, they offer a compelling glimpse into ancient Chinese burial customs, military culture, and social hierarchy during one of China's most formative imperial eras. Price for each.
