A Terra Cotta Figure of a Hawk

Han Dynasty, China, 206 BCE–220 CEA grey terracotta figure of a hawk sculpted in a stylized yet powerful form with outstretched wings and an elevated posture. The sculpture reflects the enduring significance of birds of prey within ancient Chinese visual culture, where hawks symbolized vigilance, authority, and martial strength. Rendered in coarse grey earthenware with a naturally aged surface, the figure combines ceremonial presence with the restrained yet fully expressive craftsmanship. The utter angularity of the piece commands interest -it has the energy and directness of the finest Neolithic pieces. It has a kind of basin between the wings, possibly using the model of an oil lamp.
