A Pottery Pair of Wrestling Fu Dogs

Han Dynasty, China, 206 BCE–220 CE Rare terracotta sculpture depicting two playful Fu Dogs modeled in a dynamic and expressive composition. Alternately, they could be fighting (or playing) dogs. Either way, the intertwined figures convey movement and tension, reflecting the naturalism associated with Han Dynasty animal sculpture. Works of this type were created as mingqi burial objects intended to symbolize protection, loyalty, strength, and vitality in the afterlife. The weathered earthenware surface and aged patina enhance the sculpture’s archaeological character and emphasize its sculptural presence.
