A Han Terracotta Storage Vessel

Han Dynasty, China, 206 BCE–220 CELarge terracotta storage vessel featuring a rounded body, flared rim, and an aged earthen patina with natural encrustation accumulated over time, enhancing the vessel’s archaeological character. The vessel is in good condition except for the lack of a mouth, which was separately molded and has since disappeared. Pottery forms of this type were commonly used for the storage and transport of grains, water, or fermented liquids, reflecting the practical ceramic traditions of the Han Dynasty's daily life. The balanced proportions and restrained surface treatment embody the enduring simplicity of early Chinese utilitarian pottery. We typically assume that these pieces were for burial rites but this piece may have actually been used. The abundant burial earth was never cleaned off -it is a rare, unrepaired, uncleaned "as found" piece.
