The musician is shown standing with both hands raised, originally holding drumsticks poised in mid-performance. Traces of the original polychrome decoration survive on the figure and instrument, including white, black, and red pigments that once enlivened the sculpture. The drum itself is decorated with concentric circular motifs, emphasizing its ceremonial importance and visual presence within the composition. Figures of musicians were created as mingqi (spirit objects) and placed within Han dynasty tombs to recreate the comforts and entertainments of earthly life in the afterlife. Music occupied a central role in court ceremony, religious observance, and elite banquets, where drums provided rhythm for ritual performances and processions. This sculpture reflects the Han belief that the deceased should be accompanied by attendants, entertainers, and symbols of refinement beyond death.
