A Dawenkou Animal-Form Vessel
$1,800
A Dawenkou culture (China, 4300 -2600 BCE) terracotta wine vessel modeled in the form of an animal, with an open mouth, separate loading spout, and integrated handle. Vessels of this type likely served as ceremonial pouring or storage containers and were often associated with ritual and funerary practices during the Neolithic period -it was never actually used. The simplified animal form reflects the symbolic role of nature within early Chinese ceramic traditions. This vessel was unearthed on the Shandong peninsula.
