A Majiayao Culture Painted Pottery Jar

A Majiayao Culture Painted Pottery Jar

$3,800
A fine example of Neolithic prehistoric art, this exceptional earthenware jar (hu) showcases the bold geometric aesthetics of the Majiayao culture (Banshan phase, c. 2600–2300 BCE) from northwestern China. Hand-coiled from local river clay and finely burnished, it stands as a testament to the sophisticated craftsmanship of the upper Yellow River valley communities over four millennia ago. The dark design is a baked-on clay slip that is burnished.
