A Majiayao Culture Painted Pottery Jar
$3,800
A captivating example of prehistoric art, this exceptional earthenware jar (hu) showcases the bold geometric aesthetics of the Majiayao culture (Banshan phase, c. 2600–2300 BCE) from northwestern China. Hand-coiled from local river clay and expertly burnished, it stands as a testament to the sophisticated craftsmanship of the upper Yellow River valley communities over four millennia ago. The swirling design, a baked-on slip, is thought to represent the turbulent waters of the Yellow River. The upper part of the vessel, along the shoulder, is burnished.
