A Majiayao Culture Painted Pottery Jar
$2,500
A superb specimen of Neolithic Chinese pottery, this exceptional earthenware jar (hu) showcases the bold geometric aesthetics of the Majiayao culture (Banshan phase, c. 2600–2300 BCE) from northwestern China. Hand-coiled from local river clay and expertly burnished, it stands as a testament to the sophisticated craftsmanship of the upper Yellow River valley communities over four millennia ago. The bold, swirling design, a baked-on slip, is thought to represent the turbulent waters of the Yellow River. The painted part of the vessel is burnished to better show off the design.
