26n01137_a_shang_dynasty_pottery_vessel_with_incised_texture
A Shang Dynasty Pottery Vessel With Incised Texture

A jar (weng) with three lugs and a finely impressed and incised pattern. The relatively small neck and rim are incised with concentric rings. The material is grey terra cotta, and it was made from stacked clay rings that were pressed together, forming smooth, uniform walls. While the clay was still moist, it was imprinted. The symbolic meaning of the texture, if there is any, is unknown. Dating is difficult; a similar example in the St. Louis Museum is described as possibly Shang or Western Zhou, with an age range of between 1600 and 771 BCE. Because of the paucity of similar examples found, more precise dating is difficult.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0564/5346/4220/files/26N01137_A_Shang_Dynasty_Pottery_Vessel_With_Incised_Texture_01.jpg?v=1793915641
