A Naga Wooden Mortar

A sculptural wooden mortar from the Naga tribes of Northeast India, carved from dense saal wood, c. 1900. Traditionally used for pounding rice or grain, the form reflects the practical ingenuity of village life—hollowed by hand with a broad rim and gently waisted body that provides stability during use. The surface bears a rich, time-softened patina with visible tool marks and age cracks that speak to decades of daily work.
