A Grand Indian Entrance with Split Pediment

This stunning pale green Indian entrance door from Gujarat was crafted in teak around 1930. The style is a rich hybrid of Indian and European design.  Its grand architectural frame is flanked by carved columns, rising to support a richly ornamented cornice crowned with a scrolling Georgian split pediment. The capitals are based on Corinthian Greek architecture embellished with Indian ornament.  The cornice is also based on Greco-Roman architecture but softly overlaid with Indian ornamentation. The door panels are intricately carved with floral motifs and reinforced with metal rivets.  The hand-forged iron ring pulls and sliding latch are in original condition. There is an additional lock on the inside of the door. The multi-layered paint is original and typical of Indian mansions –bright colors were preferred, and bright sun and monsoonal rains washed much of it off within a few years, producing beautiful patina we prize today.
