The British from 1840 to 1948 colonized Thailand’s neighbor, Burma. (Alone among Southeast-Asian nations, Thailand was never colonized.) During the British period in Burma, Burmese craftsmen made a great deal of fine Teak furniture in the British style. Today this colonial furniture is prized for its quality, beauty and unique blending of Asian and Western designs.
