A teak wood figure of a young monk in a posture of devotion and with a facial expression is one of piety and innocence. The piece is covered in natural red cinnabar lacquer and polychrome. There is some damage to the wood from moisture; this is appropriate to its age and use. Figures of monks were often placed around Buddha images in Thai temples. There tends to be a great deal of diversity in the depiction of these figures as they are not holy sculptures to be worshipped but merely decorative sculptures that have an educational function.
