Lanna Thai: Rain Goddess

A Thai-Burmese altar figure depicting a rain goddess wringing out her hair, causing rain to fall. The sculpture is an example of Northern Thai interpretation of Thai Buddhist iconography. The face is somewhat elongated and there is a naive quality to the expression. Unlike urban-made sculptures from wealthier districts, there is no gold or fine tree lacquer used in the finish; instead, it is made from chalky natured pigments.
