Indian Printing Blocks Art Wall
One of the pleasures of operating an antique shop is blending antique elements into modern projects. This week we made a large art wall from a collection of Indian printing blocks. The technique has been used over generations and had a big role play in fashion industry. The wooden blocks come from Rajasthan, India and were used to print natural dyes onto cotton fabric. These blocks are made from teak, sycamore and pear. Each one is hand-carved and unique
Once the wooden block is ready, it is dipped in the paint and pressed on to the fabric. A maker will repeat the process over and over until it covers the whole fabric. However, in a modern design, we think that the block can be used in many ways, such as notebook cover page, gift wrap, or a backdrop!.
